October is an international month against breast cancer!

During autumn 2009 we maintained contacts with secondary school teachers trained by our organization in frames of the Belarusian-Swedish project “Youth in Development”.

Members of the Bobruisk local organization of YWCA of Belarus city, headed by its chair Irina Anufrieva had visited the local organization in Mozyr at the end of October 2009 in frames of the Belarusian-Swedish project on cooperation of local organizations.

Despite summer holidays, some important and joyful events took place in Slonim.

From May 4 to June 4, 2009 Minsk hosted charity event “Month of Healthy breast!” The aim of the event was to remind women about their health and the need to take care of it, to have regular medical check-ups and self-examinations.

The event “Decide with open eyes!” was held in Slonim, Grodno region during the lsat week of April in frames of the international “La Strada” programme on human trafficking prevention.

On the 5th of April the winners of the art contest “Man and woman: equal rights – equal opportunities” in 2009 were named.

On the threshold of the International Women’s Day, 8th of March and during the entire month the events in frames of the Belarusian-Swedish project “For Life!” were held in Slonim.

The brochure "Domestic violence: problem and solutions" was published by YWCA of Belarus in December 2008. The brochure was printed in frames of the Swedish-Belarusian project in frames of the commemoration of 16 days against gender violence.

On December 7 - 12, 2008 the international seminar on best practices exchange on the topic " Responsible parenthood: gender approach" was organized by Belarusian YWCA.

Two-days start-up training for 12 trainers was held in Minsk in December 2008 in frames of the project “For life”

The activities in frames of the project “For life” have been held in Slonim for the second year. This year, among other meetings during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the seminar-training for young girls and women, should be mentioned separately. The meeting was attended by the graduate students of school #2, Slonim college of medicine, teachers from town and district schools.

It has already become a good tradition to organize a meeting in the artillery group #841 located in Slonim on December 1, World AIDS Day.

Pieces of art, created by individuals or groups of young people aged 14 to 18, reflecting the understanding of equal rights and equal opportunities for men and women in various fields of social and family life, are admitted to the competition.

In October 2008 the results of the contest for the best learning module on gender equality for the school pupils, elaborated by our participants were announced.

Smorgon local YWCA in frames of the celebration of the international day for the elimination of violence against women and 16 days against gender violence announced a competition “Under the blue sky” among students of 10 to 13 years old of the art department of Children’s Art School.

In frames of Belarusian- Swedish cooperation YWCA of Belarus has organized School of Gender Equality in June 2008 for the teachers of secondary schools from all over the country. Sixteen teachers from all regions of our country were selected as a result of a competition: 15 women and 1 man. During 1 week they attended a series of seminars-trainings organized in sports center “Staiki” nearby Minsk.

On May 18th 2008 in frames of YWCA Day celebration Smorgon regional YWCA had visited Svyato-Vvedensky Convent in Bogushy village.

From January till March 2008 Young Women Christian Association of Belarus conducted a social-economic overview “The cost of domestic violence in Belarus”.

The presentation of the handbook "Gender education of youth", which contains information for organization of educational work with teenagers and young people on gender equality, responsible parenthood and reproductive health was hold on March 2 in Minsk International Educational Center (IBB)

In June 2007 YWCA/La Strada Belarus was informed to be awarded with UNIFEM (German Committee) price for best anti-trafficking project in Eastern Europe. The award is 10,000 Euro that has been shared with another price-winner – project “Maiti” from Nepal. La Strada Belarus was supported and recommended for price by German NGO “Ban Ying”. Two projects were selected among 100 submitted applications.

In September 2007 the participants of the project "Changing attitude towards breast cancer among women and in society" took part in the first national conference on advocacy of breast cancer and Third Summit on prevention of breast cancer in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, organized in Minsk.

In august 2007 the winner of the art contests "Responsible parenthood: gender approach" Darya Kartakova (Borisov, Minsk region) had visited youth exchange camp in Sweden, organized by Rotary Club Ljungby-Kungshogen. This trip was a first prize of the contest.
